Biography
Bruce Springsteen is one of the greatest musicians in history according to Rolling Stone magazine, creating in his songs a nostalgic and slightly sad image of old America of the 1980s. His work is the embodiment of the spirit of the old rock and roll, all the disappointments and contradictions of that time.
fact
Childhood and youth
The full name of the musician is Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen. He was born in Long Beach, New Jersey on September 23, 1949. Later, the performer will devote entire albums to his small homeland: the atmosphere of the American hinterland forever penetrated his heart and was reflected in the poetry of songs.
The beginning of the musician's biography is the usual story of a teenager from a poor family. Douglas Springsteen's father was a driver but was often out of work. The mother, who eventually became the main breadwinner, worked as a secretary. In addition to Bruce, they had two more girls - Pamela and Virginia.
The Springsteen house stood not far from the Nestlé factory, and the wind carried the smell of chocolate from it, which became for the musician one of the most pleasant childhood memories. The family did not live easy, and in order to buy their son a new Kent guitar for $ 60, the parents had to go into debt.
Already in childhood, Bruce firmly decided who he would become. He was only interested in music, and he avoided other matters, including studies, as best he could. The boy did not communicate much with his peers, brought his guitar to school and played quietly at breaks all alone. After graduation, Bruce even refused to go to prom.
fact
Music
In his teenage years, he tried his hand at yard boy bands. In the early 1970s, Bruce moved to New York, where he settled in the Greenwich Village area. American by nationality, he has always shown an interest in folk motives and personal themes. His early songs are in the spirit of folk rock and have strong influences from Van Morrison and Bob Dylan.
Springsteen released his first album, Greeting from Asbury Park, NJ, but it did not sell well and attracted little critical attention. The second disc, The Wild, the Innocent & the E-Street Shuffle, released six months later, suffered the same fate. When Springsteen rose to fame, the audience turned their attention to the old works, and both discs achieved platinum status.
"Shot" only the third album - Born to Run. The triumph was amazing. By that time, Bruce had founded the E-Street Band, and offers of tours and concerts poured into the new group. In a review of the album, music critic John Landau stated:
In 1975, he was recognized as the most sought-after performer in the United States. Besides his own repertoire, Bruce wrote songs for other bands. In 1978, he created the song Because the Night for Patti Smith, which immediately topped the charts and became the best singer in her career.
Those years in the United States turned out to be successful and fruitful for many artists, but despite the growing competition, Springsteen stayed on the musical Olympus. In 1980, his 4th album, The River, was released. The ballad Hungry Heart became a kind of the artist's business card - not a single concert could do without it.
In 1982, Springsteen's discography was replenished with the acoustic compilation Nebraska, and in 1984 - with a new disc Born in the USA, which again made the country's music industry a bomb. Seven pieces of music from it were released as singles and sold in huge numbers, and the album itself was declared platinum 10 times.
From 1990 to 2000, the artist collected a whole collection of Grammy awards, including for the best male vocal. In 1999, his song Streets of Philadelphia, featured in the film "Philadelphia," won an Oscar, and was filmed for the first video in Springsteen's career.
In 2008, the musician turned to politics, supporting Barack Obama's election campaign. The next year in terms of money was unusually successful for him: according to the American Billboard magazine, Springsteen then took the second place among the highest paid artists, earning $ 57.6 million. Nine years later, he again touched upon the political topic, hinting in the song That's What Makes Us Great that he is unhappy with Trump's policies.
In 2017, Bruce took to the stage with U2 lead singer Bono, performing Because the Night, and joined Paul McCartney for a concert at the Broadway Theater. He also performed some of his hits as a duet with Sting.
In 2013, Bailey Walsh's documentary Springsteen and Me was released about the artist's life and career. Another interesting fact: in honor of the musician, they named a small planet, discovered in 1999 by a New Zealand scientist.
fact
Personal life
Bruce's first wife was model and actress Julianne Phillips. The marriage lasted 4 years.
In 1991, he married a new girlfriend, Pati Shialfe, with whom he sang in the E-street Band. The couple are still together, they are raising three children - daughter Jessica and sons Evan and Sam.
Springsteen tries to be attentive to fans. Once a brave fan asked the artist to come to his mother for dinner and was very surprised when the rock star accepted the invitation. Bruce did drop by and was so pleased with the chance acquaintance that, according to rumors, he still sometimes visits the family.
fact
Bruce Springsteen now
Today, the musician rarely appears on stage and almost never goes to large venues, preferring to give small private concerts, devote time to his personal life and calm creativity.
Previously, his "trick" was energetic performances, during which Bruce actively moved around the stage, danced and talked with the audience (guitarist Tom Morrello who played with him complained that performances with Springsteen "erased joints into powder"), but in 2018 Bruce turned 68, and now he prefers to save energy.
The musician has accounts on Facebook, Instagram and other popular social networks, but he rarely gives interviews, preferring to communicate with fans live at concerts.

Interesting Facts
In the late 1960s, the singer received the nickname Boss from fans, but Springsteen himself does not like it. The first song that Bruce played on the guitar was Twist and Shout by The Beatles.
The singer did not immediately develop a relationship with the Catholic faith: as a child, he studied at a religious school with strict procedures. Bruce hated school rules and constantly protested against them, for which the nun once put the boy in a trash can. Springsteen barely escaped being sent to service in Vietnam due to an injury he suffered in an accident at the age of 17. In the video clip for the song Glory Days, both spouses of the musician - the former and the current one - starred.
