Biography

Singer David Coverdale is one of the most famous musicians of the 1970s galaxy, who participated in two famous hard rock bands. He became a co-author of many permanent hits, due to which he became famous throughout the world. Collaboration with guitarist Jimmy Page from the Led Zeppelin team brought the artist even more popularity.

fact

Childhood and youth

The musician was born in the seaside resort town of Saltburn-By-the-Sea in Great Britain on September 22, 1951. From childhood, he felt a love of music, as his parents owned a pub where local and invited artists often performed. But the boy's talent was revealed a little later, and soon he learned to play the guitar.

As a child, David did not suspect that his future would be inextricably linked with the stage. Having a love of drawing, after school the guy entered the art college in Middlesbrough. True, I did not study there for long, interest in singing outweighed the scales.

Having never received an art education, at the age of 16, Coverdale became a member of the student blues group "Denver Mule", then began singing with the group "The Skylines", whose name later changed to "The Government". It was under this name that he was recognized by "Deep Purple", for which he played with other guys in 1969.

Coverdale went on his first tour to Denmark with Harvest, although the young man did not stay there for long. In his youth, he tried to be realized in different musical directions, and therefore without fear he changed bands, and each time his performance on stage attracted more and more views.

Returning from the tour, David joined the River's Invitation. Although the guy had a job as a musician at that time at a professional level, it did not bring a stable income, so he was forced to go to a clothing store in Redcar for shifts.

Music

David became really popular later. Having created the group "The Fabulosa Brothers" in 1973, he continued to perform with his friends and recorded new songs. In the same year from the magazine Melody Maker it became known about the audition, the "Deep Purple" team was looking for a new vocalist, and therefore large-scale shows were arranged. Cassettes with recordings were sent to them from different parts of the country. Coverdale also did not stand aside and, on the advice of a friend, sent a demo tape to the guys' headquarters.

Musician and composer John Lord, who has been with Deep Purple since its inception, later spoke in an interview about the day when he had to listen to a huge number of recordings, he himself called them "attempts by amateurs."

As luck would have it, the first tape I heard belonged to Coverdale. The guy took Harry Nilson's composition for the performance, and although the sound quality was not the best, John was struck by the voice of a young talent. Soon, David received a telegram in the mail with an immediate invitation to a live audition.

Legend has it that back in 1969, when Coverdale was opening for Deep Purple, Lord took a number from the guy, "just in case." And this incident came when Ian Gillan left the team. The audition took place at Clearwell Castle, and in 1973 David was confirmed as the new vocalist of the band.

So in his biography appeared the first album "Burn", recorded with new friends, which was a huge success and received gold status in the United States, and in England for some time occupied the first lines of the music charts. It also includes the pseudo-blues composition "Mistreated", it was David who set the mood in it.

The next album, "Stormbringer", was released in late 1974. This time, the influence of funk and soul felt on the previous disc became even more noticeable. The fans liked this disc no less than the last one, which also raised it to the top positions of the charts in Great Britain and America. And the song "Soldier Of Fortune" included in it made Coverdale famous. And this despite criticism from many fans of the group, who believe that David does not fit the place of the vocalist, often swallows endings and does not pronounce words clearly.

In the summer of 1975, Ritchie Blackmore left the band, and therefore the next album, Come Taste The Band, was recorded without him. In his place, a replacement was quickly found in the form of Tommy Bolin. Despite the popularity of the disc, a crisis was brewing in the team. David has openly stated that while working in the studio, he wants to sing, and not cry out.

In 1976, the situation inside the group became so tense that the musicians could no longer work together, it was decided to disband. Although it was difficult for Coverdale, he left the band and embarked on a solo career, releasing his latest album, "Last Concert in Japan".

Coverdale did not sit idle for long and in 1997 presented his first solo album "White snake", followed by another disc, "Northwinds". Most of the songs were rock ballads. And since at that time the preference in Britain was given to punk rock, releases did not come to the court. But that didn't diminish David's desire to make music.

Gathering like-minded people Bernie Marsden and Mickey Moody, Neil Murray, David Daul and Brian Johnson (the latter was soon replaced by Lord), Coverdale created a new group "Whitesnake", and under this name they again declared themselves on the big stage.

So in 1978 the musician's discography was replenished with a new album "Snakebite". In the same year, the team recorded the disc "Trouble", and over the next 2 years presented 4 more discs. By the early 1980s, the collective had built a positive reputation for itself and quickly entered the upper circles of the rock communities of those years.

In the new line-up, the musicians released albums almost every year, toured America and other countries, gave more than one hundred concerts. True, in 1983 the band was again waiting for a coup, Marsden left it, but in 1985 the ranks of "Whitesnake" were replenished with a new drummer Ainsley Dunbar. The peak of the “white snake's” career came in 1987, when they presented a new album “Whitesnake” to the public, and two years later presented the disc “Slip of the Tongue”.

Jimmy Page & David Coverdale

Other artists were jealous of the group's success, but not everything in the team was so simple. Returning home from his tour, in 1990, David decides to end his relationship with his stage colleagues and announces the demise of "Whitesnake". And a year later he meets with Jimmy Page in New York and discusses the possibility of joint creativity. This is how the album of two legends is born, called Coverdale / Page. After his presentation in March 1993, the stars set off on a tour that lasted until October.

With a commitment on behalf of Whitesnake to record company EMI, the band was to release another album. In 1997, they got together again and presented the record "Starkers in Tokyo", which included many versions of the band's hits, performed to the accompaniment of acoustics. And then the men presented the disc "Restless Heart", and later they staged a concert in Moscow in support of it.

And although then Coverdale announced that he would no longer act on behalf of the group, in 2002 it became known about the resumption of the group's activities and a new lineup was revealed. But until that moment, David managed to release several more discs, the most significant for fans was his solo album "Into The Light" in 2000.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, musicians have not created many albums, but they have not stopped attending tours and performing concerts. And in between, they record new songs. So, in 2008, the fans heard the compositions from the album "Good To Be Bad", and in 2011 and 2015 they appreciated 2 more of their discs - "Forevermore" and "The Purple Album". At the same time Coverdale shot another video for the song "Too Many Tears".

Personal life

The musician's personal life is very eventful. His first chosen one was the German Julia Borkowski. But it so happened that in 1985 they divorced, from this marriage the man had a daughter, Jessica.

In early 1989, the man married American actress and model Tony Kithain, her real name is Julie. The girl had some fame even before she met David, by 1984 she played several minor roles in films and flashed in the image of an extra in the picture of young Tom Hanks.

After the wedding, Coverdale and his wife were called the golden couple, they even looked alike. Tony dreamed of becoming a star, and David helped her in this. She even starred in her husband's music videos, including "Here I Go Again", "Is This Love" and "Still of the Night".
