Biography
Francis Tiafoe is one of the youngest tennis players in the world, an athlete who has broken several age records. At the age of 15 he conquered the Orange Bowl, at the age of 20 he won the Delray Beach Open, making him the youngest American champion of the Association of Tennis Professionals.
Francis Tiafoe and his twin brother Franklin were born on January 20, 1998, in Hyattsville, Maryland. Constanct and Alfina's parents emigrated from Sierra Leone to escape the civil war.
In 1999, Tiafoe Sr. joined a team that built the Center for Young Tennis at the University of College Park, Maryland. When the object was handed over, Constant got a job there as a security guard.
For the next 11 years on weekdays, Francis and Franklin lived with their father at the Center. From the age of 4, the boys took advantage of the opportunities - playing tennis at night. We spent the weekend with my mother.
At the age of 5, Constant arranged for the children to enter the Center bypassing the qualifying rounds. Francis' technique, work ethic and zeal for victory interested coach Mikhail Kuznetsov. He raised Tiafoe for nine years, from 2006, until the young man left for the U.S. Tennis Association base in Boca Raton, Florida.

Confidence on the court and precise technique helped Francis become famous even before entering the professional arena. He achieved a number of titles, reaching 2nd place in the junior ranking of the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
At the age of 14, the American won the first prestigious international tournament - Les Petits As in France, and a year later became the youngest player to win the Orange Bowl. He was confronted by compatriot Stefan Kozlov. A few months later, Francis was subdued by the Easter Bowl. These two victories made Tiafoe the best junior in the French Open in 2014.
At the U.S. Open, Francis showed the best result at the U.S. Grand Slam before being defeated in the semifinals by Frenchman quentin Khalis. In August 2015, Tiafoe ended his career as a junior with a victory at the U.S. Tennis Association National Championships at the age of 17. Stefan Kozlov stood up again on the way to this title.
Tiafoe's debut in professional sports took place at the age of 16 at the Citi Open in Washington. Then the match ended with the defeat of Russian Evgeny Donskoy. It was not even a show at the U.S. Open wild card (a term meaning in tennis a special invitation) - the victory went to the Japanese Tatsuma Ito.
Only by joining forces with Michael Mmo, Francis was able to achieve triumph. The boys beat sports veterans Victor Estrella Burgos and Teimuraz Gabashvili at the doubles tournament of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). The guys didn't go any further than the first match.
In March 2015, Tiafoe won his first professional title, winning ITF Futures in Bakersfield, California, and a month later made it to the ATP Challenger World Tour.
At the beginning of the competition, Francis was not even in the top 800 athletes, but after a number of confident victories reached the top 300. The rating was too low, but the American continued to scramble to the top, winning set after set. In the end, he reached the final and fought the Argentine Facundo Bagnis - the first opponent of Tiafoe from the top 100.
Brilliant performances allowed Francis to get to another Grand Slam tournament - the French Open. However, here the game went not so well: from the first set the young man began to lose to Martin Klizan, a Slovak tennis player. Despite the defeat, Tiafoe became the first 17-year-old American to play in the main league.
In the same year, the athlete made his debut in the U.S. Open wild card. Despite losing to Serb Viktor Troicki and then losing to Briton Daniel Evans in the ATP Challenger, Tiafoe improved his ranking to 176th place.
By the end of 2016, Francis had broken a losing streak by beating Salvadoran Marcelo Arevalo and winning his first ATP Challenger title. The rating rose to 123rd place, and the year ended in 108th position. A similar result made him the highest-paid player in the 18-year-old category.
Tiafoe made his debut at the Australian Open, entering the main line-up of the Grand Slam tournament for the first time. A series of victories helped the athlete to climb to 65th place in the rankings and reach the first in his career ATP finals in doubles tennis.
In 2017, Francis competed at Wimbledon, beating Robin Hase of the Netherlands. Then he won over the 7th place in the world rankings - Aleksandr zverev. These achievements prompted John McEnroe, the legendary tennis player, to take Tiafoe to the U.S. national team to play in the Laver Cup. The team consisted mainly of athletes from the top 25. In the first match Francis lost to the Croat Marin Cilic.
The following year began again unsuccessfully: out of 38 matches Tiafoe won only 9. Over time, the performance of the promising athlete leveled, he reached the quarterfinals of the ATP, but lost to top tennis player Kevin Anderson.
Wild card gave Francis the opportunity to fight at the Delray Beach Open. In the end, he became the first "wild" participant to win the tournament. On the swagger, the young man beat his idol, the owner of the 10th place in the top of Juan Martin del Potro, followed by Jeong Hyun and Denis Shapovalov.
Success turned Tiafoe's head. He reached the ATP Finals for the second time, defeating the current 11th-ranked winner, Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, but lost to Juan Souza. Performances allowed the athlete to get into the top 50.
In 2018, Tiafoe again tried his luck in the Laver Cup and again lost in the first match, this time to Grigor Dimitrov.
Like most American tennis players, Francis Tiafoe plays an aggressive, attacking game that is based on a powerful right-back. His ball speed can reach 225 km/h, but usually not more than 190 km/h. John Isner, who met Tiafoe at the U.S. Open, said that the young man has perhaps the best serve in modern sport.

Personal life

Athletes have been together since February 2016 and may already be thinking about becoming a husband and wife.
According to Tiafoe's personal confessions, he entered the sport for the sake of his parents. In March 2017, the young man bought his mother a house in Maryland, and his father - an apartment in Orlando. Now he performs at tournaments not to make money - by the way, as of February 2019, his prize money is more than $1.9 million, and to one day become the first racket in the world.
Juan Martin del Potro is Tiafoe's idol mainly because the tennis ball with his autograph first appeared in the collection of the young man. On the court they have met twice so far, both won by one victory. Francis himself also tries to be a role model, especially for black children.
Tiafoe's sporting tastes are varied. He oversees the career of basketball player Kevin Durant, in football he is a favorite for the Washington Redskins, and in hockey - for the Washington Capitals.

The ATP New York Open was held in the United States from February 11 to 17, 2019. Tiafoe played his first match against Jason Jang of Taiwan. Athletes repeatedly met with each other, surprised each other with aggressive play. The favorite of the match was Jason Djanga, who won in straight sets.
