Childhood and adolescence

Oscar was born on February 4, 1973 in the Californian town of Montebello in the family of hereditary boxers. Vincente's grandfather, father Joel Sr. and older brother De La Hoya were boxing. At the age of 6, Oscar got into a makeshift ring arranged by a cousin in the yard of the house.

Boxing did not like the boy, he was fond of baseball and skateboarding. But his family fueled Oscar's interest in the fights with material encouragement. In order to win, the boy mastered the hook on the left, which often plunged the opponent on the carpet. In addition, Oscar deftly walked away from blows to the face, for which he earned the nickname "golden boy."

At the age of 15, Oscar De La Hoya won the U.S. junior boxing title, and a year later won the Golden Gloves. After the first victories in the sports biography of the boxer came a crucial period of preparation for the 1992 Olympics, which was to be held in Barcelona.

Oscar De La Hoya made it to the final and met his opponent Marco Rudolph, who lost at the 1991 World Championships in Australia. At the Olympics, Oscar managed to become a champion, sending in the 3rd round of the opponent in a knockout. The joy of victory was overshadowed by the death of her mother, who died of a malignant tumor in those days.

The boxer's victory at the Olympics drew a line under his amateur career, in which Oscar achieved phenomenal results. Of the 228 fights, the athlete won 223 victories, 163 of which knocked out opponents.

In 1994, Oscar competed against WBO lightweight champion Jorge Paes, a year later defeated IBF world champion Rafael Ruelas. In 1996, Oscar was awarded a technical victory over the champion in the 1st welterweight title Julio Cesar Chavez.

In 1997, De La Hoya moved to welterweight and immediately won on points against Pernell Whitaker in a 12-round fight. He then defeated Hector Camacho in the fight for the WBC champion belt. A year later, the boxer confirmed the title in a fight against Ike Kworthy.

In 1999, a fight took place, which was widely publicized in the world media and broke the record for ticket sales. On September 18, two undefeated WBC and IBF world champions, Oscar De La Hoya and Felix Trinidad, met in Las Vegas. The competition lasted 12 rounds, the leading oscar at the beginning of the fight lost to Felix on points. Rehabilitated in a duel against Darrell Kohli, in 2000 Oscar lost in a fight with Shane Mosley on points.

In 2001, there was a meeting with Canadian boxer Arturo Gatti, in which Oscar behaved eerily, not allowing the enemy to recover from a series of blows to the head and stomach. After the 5th round, the referee stopped De La Hoya, and the judges announced the technical victory of the American. After moving into the first middleweight, Oscar beat Javier Castillejo in 12 rounds, and in 2002 he met THE WBA champion Fernando Vargas, who was knocked out in the 11th round. In the same year, Oscar De La Hoya creates his own corporation Golden Boy Promotions, which begins to promote in the field of boxing matches.

In 2003, the "golden boy" took revenge and met with undefeated opponent Shane Mosley, who again beat the American. Failure only hardened the athlete, and Oscar, having risen the weight category to the average, enters the ring against the undefeated WBO champion Felix Sturm. Having defeated the opponent from Germany on points, De La Hoya becomes the only athlete who has been the champion in 6 weight categories.

After losing to Bernard Hopkins in 2004, Oscar moved into the first middleweight and in 2006 knocked out Ricardo Mayorga. In early May 2007, De La Hoya entered the ring against Floyd Mayweather in a fight for the WBC title. In a tense struggle that lasted 12 rounds, none of the rivals wanted to concede to each other.

The dispute was resolved by a vote of the judges who cast the majority of the points on Mayweather. Oscar was dissatisfied with the decision of the judges, but even such professionals as the Russian boxer, former absolute world champion Kostya Tszyu, after watching the video of the fight spoke in favor of the young rival Mayweather.

In 2008, Oscar De La Hoya and Filipino Manny Pacquiao fought. Contrary to the expectations of the fans of the "golden boy", in the 8th round technical and agile Manny achieved victory over the enemy. After the defeat, Oscar De La Hoya announced his retirement from professional sports. Boxer turned his attention to business, to the development of a sports agency.

In 2009, De La Hoya appeared in a showpiece fight against NBA player and Hollywood actor Shaquille O'Neal. The basketball player has created his own show Shaq Vs, which invites sports stars and competes with them in their categories.
