Childhood and adolescence

Philip Seymour Hoffman was born on July 23, 1967 in the small American town of Fairport.

His mother, Marilyn O'Connor, worked as a primary school teacher before taking up law and was given the job of a civil judge. Gordon Stawell Hoffman's father, an employee of the Xerox Corporation, came from a family of German Protestants who had moved to the Rochester suburbs of New York. The parents raised four children and divorced when Philip was 9 years old.

As a child, the boy was fond of sports, especially wrestling and baseball, but after visiting the production of Arthur Miller "All My Sons" his life changed dramatically. In addition, the injury of the cervical spine put an end to training and forced to look for a new hobby, which eventually became theater.

In 1981, Hoffman joined the drama club and at all costs decided to become like Robert Downey, Jr., who played leading roles in local productions.

At the age of 17, Philip practiced at the summer school of the arts in Saratoga Springs and there he befriended Dan Futterman and Bennet Miller, who later influenced the biography and the formation of a young actor.

When it came time to think about higher education, Hoffman applied to several institutions and eventually enrolled at new York University's Tisch School of the Arts.

Continuing to participate in summer theatrical programs, in his youth Philip and his friends organized the actors troupe Bullstoi and thus practiced drama before receiving his bachelor's degree in 1989.

For the next couple of years, the New York University graduate worked in a Broadway theater, then made his debut in law and order and the independent film Triple Boogie in the Cheap Hole.

Movies

Hoffman's first notable work in cinema was the role of a negative character in the drama based on the work of Giovanni Arpino "The Smell of a Woman", followed by dozens of expressive episodes in the films of American and European directors.

In 1996, Philip's long and fruitful collaboration with cinematographer Paul Thomas Anderson began and he worked together in the films "The Rock Eight" and "Boogie Nights". Then, after casting for the black comedy of the famous Coen brothers, Hoffman received the role of a millionaire's assistant in the film "The Big Lebowski" and earned recognition in the acting environment as a master of embodiment of bright anti-social characters.

In 1998-1999, Philip was lucky enough to work with such stars as Robin Williams in The Healer Adams, Tom Cruise and Julianne Moore in "Magnolia", as well as become a partner on the set of Robert De Niro in the psychological drama Joel Schumacher "Without flaw." For his last work, the actor received nominations for prestigious American awards, including the Screen Actors Guild Award.

At the same time, Hoffman was named the best performer of supporting roles, evaluating the work in the Oscar-winning thriller "The Talented Mr. Ripley" with prizes for best supporting actor from the National Society and the Board of American Film Critics.

In the 2000s, Philip's most striking work was his role in John Hamburg's romantic comedy "Here's Polly" and the portrayal of a corrupt journalist in Brett Ratner's psychological drama "Red Dragon".

The main film in the actor's career was the biography of the American writer Truman Capote in the eponymous work of an old friend Bennett Miller. Working on the image of the famous novelist, Hoffman looked through hundreds of photos and documents and eventually got into the image perfectly. For this he received rave reviews from critics and colleagues and the highest award of the American Academy Of Motion Picture Academy Awards.

In the wake of his success, Philip did a great job in the television series "Empire Falls" and played the main character named John Savage tragicomedy Tamara Jenkins "Savage". The actor fit perfectly into the film crew and received a golden globe nomination and an Independent Spirit award.

Hoffman's directorial debut was an adaptation of Robert Glaudini's play "Jack Goes Swimming". After the American premiere in January 2010, the film was shown at several foreign film festivals and released in Canada, Germany, France and the United Kingdom.

The 2010s films featured supporting roles in "The Ides of March" and "The Man Who Changed Everything," as well as the main character in Paul Thomas Anderson's drama "The Master." After the premiere of the last at the 2012 Venice Film Festival, Hoffman in an interview with journalists called the leader of the religious movement Lancaster Dodd the best reincarnation and the most favorite character.

Philip was then cast as Plutarch Havensby in Francis Lawrence's The Hunger Games, and in 2013-2014 the actor starred in Woody Harrelson, Jennifer Lawrence, Donald Sutherland and others.

Personal life

In interviews, Hoffman rarely talked about his personal life, freeing the family from the attention of ubiquitous journalists.

However, information about a long relationship with costume designer Marianne O'Donnell was leaked to the press. The actor's wife stayed with him for 14 years and in 2003-2008 became a mother of three children named Cooper Alexander, Tallulla and Will.

For unknown reasons shortly before Philip's death, the couple broke up, and the last love of the master of secondary roles was his assistant Isabella Wing-Davy.

Death

As a student, Hoffman became addicted to drugs and alcohol. But after a rehabilitation course in a specialized clinic, he managed to give up his bad habits and maintain sobriety for 23 years.

In 2013, the actor was again spotted using banned drugs that caused his death on February 2, 2014. It happened in Philip's apartment in Manhattan, where the body of the Oscar winner was discovered by the beloved Isabella and screenwriter David Bar Katz.

Detectives who arrived at the scene said Philip was lying in the bathroom with a syringe in his hand and bags of heroin and other drugs were lying around. It is still unknown from what exactly the actor died, but in the official conclusion the death was recognized as an accident caused by acute mixed drug intoxication.

Hoffman's funeral, held on February 7, 2014, was attended by relatives, friends and colleagues on set, including Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Ethan Hawke and Joaquin Phoenix. After the farewell ceremony, the actor's body was cremated, and the ashes were not put in the grave, but given to the family for safekeeping.
