Great movie, I really didn’t like it.

What are you laughing at? Try yourself to throw out two full night pots during a storm. The outrage of a Bagel cat Old Winslow stands on a rock and says to himself: “I, Ephraim Winslow, have been a lighthouse keeper for two months, but no one calls me Winslow - a keeper!” “I, Ephraim Winslow, have been a great lumberjack for a couple of years, but no one calls me Winslow is a quick ax!” - But as soon as I fuck the mermaid once ... In general, sexual relations with the mermaid and alcoholism are directly promoted by this film. Lyudmila The film has a great sense of humor. I enjoyed it in the mood. The acting is just high.

The Lighthouse Review

The late nineteenth century, a small rocky island off the coast of New England.

On the island comes a young man named Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson): he hired to spend a month on the lighthouse in the company of an old lighthouse caretaker, whose name is Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe).

Wake - grumpy and malicious old man, claiming that he - a former sailor. Wake from the beginning treats Winslow like his slave: he does not allow him to go up to the lantern and Winslow falls the hardest job: to carry coal in a wheelbarrow, to tear everything in the building, to carry heavy cans with kerosene.

In the evenings, Thomas is used to drinking rum, which is strictly forbidden by the rules. Ephraim must drink with him, and he refuses, but Wake refuses, and over time Winslow becomes an even more bitter drunk than Wake.

A month of work on the lighthouse is not too pleasant: Thomas all the time digs up to Ephraim, but he eventually dares and begins in the same spirit to answer the old fart, and then a new attack - just at the moment when they were to change, the weather has deteriorated dramatically, the storm began, so they are still for a few weeks, or months remained locked on this island and Winslow's got a roof on his way.

***

Director Robert Eggers declared himself an arthouse horror "The Witch", which delighted critics at the Sundance Festival.

Eggers was praised for the masterful creation of an atmosphere of eerie not with special effects and makeup, but with the help of the director's techniques of the old school like Hitchcock. At the same time, it should be said that the ordinary audience of this film appreciated: eggers' directorial debut collected a very good box office, showing KKU as much as 7.18 (KKU, equal to three - the picture at least paid off).

Eggers' new film was, shall we say, quite show-off.

Filmed on black-and-white film, and even extremely specific, almost square format, which filmed about ninety years ago, when the films only appeared sound and from the frame 35 mm format 4:3 required to put a large space to record the soundtrack (it was then optical), resulting in a format of 1.19. Plus only one or two locations, two people in a small room almost the entire film - but any critic as soon as heard that there are so many "tastes" so immediately felt that it immediately needs to watch, by all means! I would like, of course, that the frame and at all was round or oval, but still, you can not demand at once everything, you need to be satisfied less.

What the hell is this terribly annoying square format?

Critics write with happiness and explain that the square symbolizes the cramped walls of the lighthouse. Or the breadth of the sea. Or the boundless breasts of mermaids. Viewers - in our cat Bagel face - are smothered and say that this show only creates problems when viewing. Especially since Eggers and cameraman Jarin Blaschke are faithful to the covenants of Lars Von Trier and shoot in natural light, and I will reveal to you a terrible secret: the smoky kerosene quality lighting does not shine.

But this is really an author's trick, it emphasizes the darkness and dullness of the space of the lighthouse, and in addition, if the screen does not see a damn thing, the audience and critics can actively incorporate their imagination, and this is also a noble task. Let them try to crunch their brains, it is, you know, superfluous. By the way, I completely agree here: the audience should be forced to think. At least occasionally.

What the film crew was able to achieve perfection, it was the creation of an extremely depressed environment. Angry, constantly farting old man (his fart - it's such a means of expression: in this way, he demonstrates that he is in charge here and no matter him at all here shy), telling terrible stories from his maritime past, and come still understand, it was actually or he just catches up on Winslow horror; a young guy who from all this gradually rides cuckoo and can no longer understand, he really fucked a mermaid or he dreamed of it; a vile one-eyed seagull that gets a guy; sexual wildness, alcoholic gatherings-fates with a sudden change of mood from "yes I'll break you now" to "yes I'll put you in now", a physical feeling of dirtiness and the whets of this place, where two smelly - literally - men are locked with each other and where they already have a bad difference of sleep from the present.

From the camera point of view, if you put aside this damn square Lang - Murnau (directors from the past, shot in this format), the picture is filmed very spectacularly.

If you for some strange reasons in this difficult time do not feel longing and depression, then do not worry - this picture will do everything to make you feel it. Even the Bublik cat, who bravely met the disgusting scene with the cat in the "Grand Budapest Hotel" (although he promised that Wes Anderson's sneakers are now always in danger), even after twenty minutes of viewing demanded to leave the film and include something a little lighter and more joyful, such as "The Saw".

Musical accompaniment - really impressive.

This eerie roar who every time - like a Sandon on nerves, the whistling of the wind, the sound of waves, the cries of seagulls, strange sounds - all contribute to the picture of this claustrophobic hopelessness.

The director intentionally did not chew anything in this picture, on the contrary - he did everything to confuse the audience with a bunch of all sorts of readable and uncalculated references, but that's what there means this and that - thing yourself, you are given a full space for conclusions.

Is the lighthouse a phallic symbol?

And what about, children, of course, phallic! It's a Freudian banana - sometimes just a banana. And Jung's lighthouse is an erected dick, proudly sticking out in the middle of the ocean, attracting young mermaids with its life-giving light! Another thing is that this light except mermaids can climb and all sorts of evil. But who even than old Lovecraft knows what's even in the depths?

What's up with wake's lantern doing naked during its night shifts? Why is he so bald - just from the light? Or does he have a blackjack sauna and mermaids? However, on the part of mermaids - it's more to Winslow.

Are Winslow and Wake the only person who invented a boss - a vile old man or, conversely, a subordinate who can be pushed around?

Yes, it's easy, any whim for the money of the audience! And who invented Winslow Wake or vice versa?

The beacon that's sticking out knows them, I'll tell you what! What difference does it make? Let one think of each other. Or another one. Or they don't exist at all, and everything happens in the brain of a one-eyed seagull, which, remember my word, will soon burst. (And it's a really cool scene.)

Or maybe they are mythological heroes - Proteus and Prometheus? (Eggers, when he mocked reporters in an interview, talked about it.) They even have similar names. Proteus, Prometheus, and their blood brothers - Arthritis and Prostatitis!

Proteus is a sea deity.

By the way, the seaman -- well, what's not Wake? And that he's a fard deity here, you know, deities -- they're different. Some of them have very peculiar habits.

Winslow - Prometheus, obviously. Everyone aspires to the light, but he is not allowed. But Prometheus wants to understand: what is there such a Proteus jerks up? After all, Prometheus for this except a primitive figure mermaid with barely marked tits and nothing: times were harsh, no you life-giving Internet! And if he comes across a living or not a very lively mermaid, well, with mermaids - you know, how difficult everything is! In addition, Prometheus really need to somehow monitor the liver - with his horse doses of alcohol - because this liver still will fly to peck some seagull, because he did not deserve an eagle yet!

That's a good movie because it doesn't explain anything, so understand as you know.

Played, by the way, perfectly, and if from Defoe always expect this, then with a millennial vampire with an unwashed head everything was not too clear, but Pattinson has long been boldly departing from "Twilight" and filmed in all sorts of interesting and complex projects, remember the same buzz time, and then just had a real challenge, which Pattinson and took - and showed himself in the picture more worthy!

That's the kind of movie it turned out to be.

With the excellent work of the director, who is really talented, accurately, accurately, and prudently mocks the audience, with mesmerizing camera work, with sound effects, from which the cat Bublik now nervously shudders in his sleep, and with excellent acting works. The normal viewer of this film will turn off in ten or fifteen minutes of viewing, which I would have done if it were not for professional masochism, and critics will look in full delight, because now it is possible to break out a detailed review about the depths of the subconscious, about the doomed Gothic Edgar Allan Poe, about the sentimental sophistication of Nathaniel Hawthorne and nameless almighty creatures from the ocean of Phillips Cthulhu to him on the ridge of madness. And at the same time they will be quite right, everything is.

Alex, thanks for the 😉 review. Right away, let's look for a review of it. And... I didn't find 😒. Why, excuse me? Didn't come in or did you have time to see it? I've only beaten him twice. The first - something began to look in a playful mood 😉. It was enough to half. Then looked completely. Hopeless and depressed, IMHO, but there's something about it.

I'd advise Exler to review "Devs." Impressive series, filmed in an unusual author's manner. You can find fault with some pustules, but do not want. And the music is picked up interestingly, the details of the burnt corpse for the funeral disco look surreal.

I recommend (including by other words) a dynamic and very tense, though rather chamber novelty - Belgian Netflix mini-series "Into The Night" - "Destination: Night" - an air-survival international group of people (from Italians to British) in a plane flying away from the global apocalypse. Looks like "Fifth Day" (you couldn't fall asleep there), but sharper and livelier. 6 episodes are watched without coming off. Cheerfully, dynamically, psychologically (battle of characters on the edge of death and against the background of the BOC), sometimes just creepy, short, do not get bored. Corpuscular wrote, though not all written agree: "Destination: Night" is based on the novel "The Age of Acsolotl" by the Pole Jacek Dukai, the script written by American Jason George, who shows foreign projects Netflix, and filmed by the Belgians. And they have made their favorite psychological hardcore into a typical genre movie. To the depths, or rather the lows of "Cordon" here did not get (at least the child was not killed), but even a smoothed picture of beautiful human qualities creates tension more than all fantastic intrigue. Once in an extreme situation, people hate, betray, and kill each other. But it is not a psychological drama, it is a pure aircraft thriller, in the spirit of "Air Prison" or "Airplane of the President", it is built on all genre lectures, and compared to their film brethren and low-budget. This, as is often the case, is good for him. When there is no money for large-scale panoramas of the end of the world, the horror has to be transmitted by dramatic means. Not these passengers, but all at all. After take-off, he explains that for unknown reasons, the sun has released radiation that kills all life, and the only way out is to move west, ahead of the sunrise. All the time to fly in the night. Having reached Reykjavik, a few passengers and the team make sure that NATO is not a psychopath (although a psychopath, of course) and tells the truth. Then begins their race for survival, which is complicated by the fact that as in the "Destination Point", they are haunted by troubles, half of which they create themselves. They speak different languages, but mostly in French (the English-language duplicate version is scolded, so look for the original and subtitles). And these people eat each other by eating and can't agree with each other. This is not only a journey into the literal night but also in the darkness of the human soul if this clot of animal instincts can be called so. Unlike the saving outer darkness, its inner is destructive as well as fantastic gamma radiation. But they still have to survive together. The idea of democracy, which they tried to follow, fails, and the interaction can be established only when a leader appears in the team, a strong-willed decision forcing them to do what is said. And they are driven by death wish - thirst for death.

For the majority, who never reads the link 😄: the continuationofThe American canon of the genre, the characters must first pull the blanket on themselves, and then still come together and become better. Here it did not happen, although the survivors still came to the likeness of a single team and some really managed to change or show positive qualities. , refuse, break down, including people. And this rhythm and tension tightens from the first series, so that all the conventions and inconsistencies are no longer important, God with the fact that in the screen time the transatlantic flight lasts less than the way from Belgium to Bulgaria, the main thing - whether they will have time, although they have no time, they have lost everything, everything is dead, the end of the world has come. But the desire to survive where it is no longer possible, becomes an end in itself not only for the characters, but also for the viewer. Emotional engagement overlaps everything, just three-plus hours of continuous adrenaline (only six episodes of 35 minutes). And this despite the fact that there are not so many characters who can be sympathetic, and a good half of catastrophic situations, such as landing an airplane unprepared people, a hundred times already exploited in films of this genre.I do not even go to analyze how two Belgian directors, who filmed all six series, managed to shoot a cliched scene so that you still hold your fists - whether you will not kill, do not kill here now Although this is not the last series. And since the season ended cliffhanger, and judging by the synopsis of the novel, the series used only its tie, then there must be "something completely different", then it is interesting what they will make of further history, where should be, haha, feral robots. And I certainly really hope to continue. Well, on Netflix for sure. Don't look into dubbing, the dubbed looks bad. (c)corpuscular

I agree with the review, the film for all the merits of the production did not like because of its vagueness and slurred. He hints at a lot, but does not really reveal any topic. And this is not a case of correct innuendo, when the viewer is given enough material from which he can build a version of what is happening. In this case, the director just offers a certain spot of Rorschach, and what to see in it, everyone can decide for himself. "The Witch" was still more solid and clear, although there was also a "second bottom." In style, "The Witch" resembles something from Polanski or Bergman. And "The Lighthouse" reminded "Antichrist" Trier, but he was quite inconsiderate, Eggers is much better.
